About the MUSEUM OF MEMORY AND HUMAN RIGHTS

The Museum of Memory and Human Rights, an architectural masterpiece, is a solemn tribute to Chile's tumultuous history. Designed by Brazilian architect Marcos Figueroa, the museum's striking modernist design and innovative use of space serve as a fitting backdrop for its crucial mission. Built in 2010, the museum is administered by the Chilean government and the Foundation for the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. Each year, it welcomes a diverse array of national and international visitors who come to pay homage to the memory of human rights violations that occurred during Chile's dictatorship and to engage with the powerful exhibitions and archives that convey these harrowing stories, making it one of Chile's most visited cultural institutions.

Located across the street from the beautiful Quinta Normal Park, the museum traces the history of the Pinochet dictatorship from its origins through to its modern implications, commemorating the victim’s abuses during the regime. Aside from educating the public through its exhibits, the museum also includes a comprehensive archive and documentation center which is open to the public. Like a mini-library, the Center of Documentation is located on the lowest level of the museum and includes both a physical collection of books as well as a digital collection of photography and videos related to this dark period of Chilean history.

• Plaza de Armas - Santiago’s Plaza de Armas has remained the heart of the city since it was founded alongside Santiago itself in 1541. The beautiful structures surrounding it are newer, largely completed in the nineteenth century. Today, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago and the Central Post Office remain among the most eye-catching facades.

The winery is located in Casablanca, and the original vineyards were situated in a valley in Casablanca that when planted in the late 1990s was unknown to the wine industry. Explore on Your Own: Barrio Yungay

Safety Advisory: As with all urban and tourist areas street crimes such as pickpocketing and muggings can occur, small bags, purses and mobile phones have been stolen in Yungay. The murder of a U.S. citizen occurred in 2023 in the neighborhood of Yungay. Read the full advisory from the U.S. Department of State here.

Yungay is a rough diamond of a neighborhood, one where colonial and Belle Époque architecture converge with street art, and residents greet each other by name. Founded in 1839, Chileans know Yungay is considered the country’s first barrio and was once a magnet for well-heeled European migrants who constructed stylish mansions in the 19th century. Central Santiago’s Yungay district has long worn its national heritage badge with pride. But after going through an industrial phase in the 1950s, recent social problems—including violence and narco-trafficking—have pummeled the community. Now, the esteemed new president has moved into this barrio patrimonial, seemingly writing a new chapter in its storied history. Unlike the United States, there is no equivalent to the White House in Chile. Gabriel Boric—Chile’s recently elected, left-wing, millennial president hails from the Patagonian city of Punta Arenas and was never a homeowner in Santiago, the need for Boric to relocate to a district that also ticked security boxes was paramount. Considering Yungay’s sketchy reputation, it is all the more remarkable that this 36-year-old president chose to rent a home in the heart of Yungay on Huérfanos street, between Libertad and Esperanza (translation: Orphans, Freedom, and Hope Street). While Yungay offers a snapshot of the Chile he inherited, Boric chose it as his barrio presidencial in order to send a message to Chileans.

• Matucana 100 - Go to a concert or check out the artwork at Matucana 100, Barrio Yungay’s railcar repair station turned cultural space. Matucana 100 hosts workshops, concerts, festivals, and theater performances, and regularly features contemporary art and photography exhibitions. 

• Selvaggio - The president allegedly gets his carbs fix at Selvaggio Bakery, where he picks up a sourdough loaf and is known to take away their delicious pizza. 

• Museo Taller - Museo Taller is a cultural space that receives students and visits from the general public throughout the year where a collection of more than 800 antique tools is exhibited and brought to life and a carpentry workshop from the early 20th century is recreated.

• NAVE - NAVE is a Creation and Residence Center located in the Yungay neighborhood, in the heart of the city of Santiago de Chile, in a heritage mansion recovered by the renowned national architect Smiljan Radic. The space opened its doors in September 2015 and is a project of the Creative Heritage Foundation.

• Peluqueria Francesa - Step back in time at the gorgeous Boulevard Lavaud Restaurant and the adjoined Peluqueria Francesa, an old-fashioned French barbershop. Decorated with antique furniture, mirrors and paintings, the restaurant offers an elegant and historic ambiance, true to the Barrio Yungay style. The Boulevard Lavaud Restaurant is ideal for a chic evening dinner or afternoon cheese plate. On your way in or out, peek into the Peluqueria. Or if you need a cut, this 1868 establishment still offers limited services.

• Fuente Mardoqueo - This is an absolute must for meat lovers. Serving up sizeable beef and pork sandwiches for nearly three decades, this fixture of the Barrio Yungay neighborhood is quite the savory experience. On top of their delicious sandwiches, this unique eatery offers a stylish and eccentric ambiance, with curious antiques attached to the walls.

• Street Art - The neighborhood is known for its vibrant street art, so be sure to take some time to explore the various murals and graffiti.

Closing Dinner + Pisco Night: Chipe Libre

The beef goes back centuries, and will never be entirely resolved: what are the true origins of pisco, a grape-based, aguardiente distillate that became a national symbol of Chile…and Peru. To end the conflict, the people behind this bar and restaurant invented a new, independent republic dedicated to Pisco that is known as Chipe Libre. Inside a vast Lastarria mansion, this imaginary state unites lands in southern Peru and northern Chile, in obeisance to a sole monarch, pisco. The bar features a good 100 labels and cocktails like “Pisco’s in the Air,” made with lime juice, raspberry, papaya and basil; plus a full range of what are among Santiago’s best traditional sours. Standout food include the crunchy-seafood saltado (marinated and grilled beef strips), with mango, served on a sizzling grill; the joint’s star sandwich, El Presidente, is a solid slice of roast beef, fried egg, and shoestring potatoes. To avoid any sovereignty disputes, Chipe Libre flies its red-and-black, center-starred flag as the republic’s national colors.
