Chief of Staff to Jared Polis | Governor of the State of Colorado
Alec Garnett is the current Chief of Staff to Jared Polis, Governor of the State of Colorado. Garnett stepped into the role on January 2nd, 2023 succeeding Lisa Kaufmann. As Chief of Staff Garnett serves as a leading voice of the Polis Administration, the chief advisor to the Governor, a strategic leader of the Governor’s message and priorities, and the senior manager in the Governor’s Office. As Chief of Staff Garnett works on behalf of the Governor to further his agenda to build a Colorado for All. During the Governor’s second term Garnett is focusing on delivering on the Governor’s Bold 5 agenda items of More Housing Now, Saving People Money on Healthcare, Property Tax Reform and Relief, making Colorado a Top Ten Safest State, and solidifying Colorado’s transition to 100% renewable energy by 2040.
Prior to serving as Chief of Staff Garnett had a successful career in the Colorado State House of Representatives. He was elected to represent the 2nd House district in 2014 succeeding Mark Ferrandino. He was a prominent leader in the House Democratic Caucus serving as Majority Leader and then Speaker of the House. Prior to his election to the state house Garnett served as the Executive Director of the Colorado Democratic Party and played a pivotal role in President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign in Colorado. He began his career in Washington, DC where he served as an aide to then Congressman Ed Perlmutter.
Garnett Is a 4th-Generation Coloradan from Boulder, Colorado. He was awarded his Bachelor’s Degree from the College of Wooster in Ohio and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Colorado. Garnett and his wife Emily, live in Capitol Hill with their children Ashton, Adella, and Anders. Alec enjoys walking the neighborhood with his family including their bulldog, Cleopatra, and rooting for the Denver Broncos.
