Montserrat Mesalles was born in San José, Costa Rica, where she currently lives and works. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Plastic Arts with a Focus in Painting from the University of Costa Rica. She later earned a graduate degree in sculpture from the same university.
Today, sculpture is Mesalles’s main artistic medium. Through her proposal, she illustrates how everything and everyone has renewable potential. Inspired by a reinterpretation of the Marcel Duchamp’s objet trouvé and by artists who work with industrial waste—such as Mark di Suvero, Robert Rauschenberg, John Chamberlain, Anthony Caro and Bill Woodrow—Mesalles treats waste as a found object and commits to revitalizing it by adhering a new poetic meaning to it.
Montserrat Mesalles has had individual exhibitions in Costa Rica and Spain and has participated in group exhibitions in Guatemala, Latvia and the United States, as well as in Italy and Cuba, in the context of the Venice and the Havana biennials.
